Opinion; “NYSC” Service or Death Sentence

image By Becky Adikwu Over the years, corp members has had so much complains ranging from molestation to threats and physical assaults. These has led to the death of so many corp members more than we can count as some of these deaths were not recorded nor reported to the right source. Sometime in 2015, i was opportune to listen to a story about a Corp member who died. The corp coordinator denied the incident when asked, he referred to the member as a “ghost corper” claiming he had never seen him before. The death toll of corp members this year is quite enormous. It is very sad that a programme meant for good is causing more harm than its purpose. Yesterday, I spoke with a corp member serving at Ebonyi state and she narrated an ugly incidence with tears in her eyes that made me shiver. According to Beatrice Fuanpoe: In the evening of April 15, 2016. I and my friend was passing by a football Field where some youths were playing football. All of a sudden, they started speaking Igbo plotting to hit us with the ball. My friend understood what they said so when they threw the ball at her she dodged it and it hit me directly in the face. I tried to understand the reason for their actions but one of them ran from afar pushed and slapped me. While trying to defend myself with words, another guy came and slapped me again. I tried to place a call but to my dismay a third person came and pushed the phone away from my ears saying “who do you have to call?” As I was talking back at him he slapped me again. Meanwhile my friend was speaking igbo to them, trying to intervene but before she could make her point clear one of them gave her two sound slaps then used his boot to hit her saying “we own this village and this should serve as a message to other corpers serving here”. The pathetic part of this story is that, the policemen in that community are afraid of the youths. We were told that we are serving our fatherland!!!!!! We were not told to expect any form of molestation and assault as payment (salaries). So many Corp members experience synonymous situations but nobody is saying anything about it. The Government has consider enforcing laws which would punish anyone who would molest and assault Corp members who are otherwise “Government property” Is it until all corp members are killed and buried with the NYSC uniform(s) and our dear Green and White flag that this situation will be tagged “CRITICAL?” When a mother is giving birth to her child Mr. Government does not feel the pains with her o! But then, the child is given to Mr. Government to serve. Is it too much for Mr. Government to protect the child? THIS IS BECOMING TOO SERIOUS A SITUATION. Corp member are dying on a daily basis. Na burial photos we dey see. Nobody is saying or doing anything!!!! My blood is not worth this kind of service.
